A traditional Japanese matcha whisk (chasen) made from white bamboo in Nara Prefecture, Japan.
This is a “Shin” style chasen, featuring straight whisk tips without the characteristic curl. With approximately 70 fine tines, it has a standard, versatile design that is well suited to both matcha practice and enjoying matcha at home.
Handcrafted in Takayama, Nara, one of Japan’s historic centres of chasen production, this Japanese-made whisk brings together traditional craftsmanship and practical everyday use.

Care instructions
- Before use, soak the whisk in warm water to thoroughly moisten the bamboo tines. This helps make them supple and less prone to breaking.
- After use, rinse the whisk with water and allow it to dry thoroughly.
- A chasen kusenaoshi (whisk holder) is recommended to help maintain the shape of the whisk.
- The presentation box is not intended for long-term storage.
- The fine tines can break easily. Check the whisk before use to ensure the tines are adequately moistened and intact.
- If the tips become curled, soaking the whisk in warm water will help straighten them and make whisking easier.
- A chasen is a consumable item. Replace it when the bamboo becomes split, mould develops, or a significant number of tines have broken.
A traditional Japanese chasen for preparing smooth, beautifully whisked matcha at home.
